There's something very nice about being in the Nevada mountains. Oddly emotional after that dream a few nights ago (in which the ranger station area I lived in at Mt. Charleston was inexplicably filled with newish-Camberville-style condos and I ran through them searching for my old house, knowing it *had* to be there because it was a historical building). In the car ride up the mountain I kept seeing flashes of my childhood* as the elevation changed. A Smokey Bear fire safety alert level sign, sage brush and rabbit brush, ponderosa, that particular pale purple wild lupine variety... Next summer I am totally visiting Mt. Charleston no matter what.
Of course, Lake Tahoe is in no way identical, it just provided flashes of familiarity.
For one, it's insanely developed--there's a starbuck's, for crying out loud. (Mt. Charleston had better not have a starbuck's when I go back.)
The network at the hotel is not free, so I'm sticking to my phone. I'll be less online than usual, and probably busy with user conference stuff anyway (if someone would only tell the n00b what was going on).
*I only lived there for 3 years, but they were the 3 years I unapologetically enshrine in my memory as childhood: it was right before puberty and crushes and so on, I played outside a lot, I played Myst and read The Hobbit for the first time... they were very formative years for me.
