My 3-weeks-for-dreamwidth thing

I'd like to start blogging more about metalsmithing, and the messy-yet-rewarding process of creating jewelry! That content is what I'm going to be putting up just here over the next 3 weeks, both to make the process a little less intimidating as compared to my wider net of blogs, and to contribute something to the three_weeks_for_dw fest.

But right now my brain is fried and I'm having trouble getting started on a project. So!

Who wants to give me jewelry prompts? You can suggest anything, however vague or concrete (though I reserve the right to veto, say, a suggestion to make a steampunk rubber chicken).

oh hey, I have more icon slots, I could icon up shiny things I've made more recently than a year ago!

Cooool! Um, what kinds of things make good jewelry prompts?

Good question! Empirical evidence suggests things like: images of things that exist in nature; names or short descriptions of characters or places; abstract-yet-evocative phrases. Things that hint at a story are my favorite... when I make jewelry, even simple things, I'm often envisioning little world-fragments of which the pieces are artifacts, if that makes sense.

I've been chewing over prompts for a while, and I keep coming back to the circus for some reason. Sawdust spangled with fallen sequins, the empty stands after the show, the control and grace of a contortionist, an aerialist the moment before a fall.

I swear, I will find you tiny trilobites someday! Maybe in August, since I think my mom and I will be passing through Thermopolis where I KNOW there's a rock shop that sells them.

Hmmm. Leaf skeletons and gears?

Hmmm, leaf skeletons. HMMM!

I did find a tiny trilobite supplier at a big gem show a few months ago, but they were expensive enough that I only got one and haven't done anything with it yet. (along with a fossilized ammonite, with fossilized mother-of-pearl still visible on it!)

Tiny trilobites should not be expensive. :( A lot of the people at gem shows way overcharge. A lot of rock shops overcharge, for that matter.

On the things-in-nature side, there are these strange plants which I thought looked cool.

How about. . .the way dust looks in the sunlight? The way rain looks on asphalt, particularly at night? The way covers look on a bed after they've been slept in?

I love prompts! :) Those are neat ideas. I wonder if I could modify my metal texturing process to suggest asphalt more...
